A peel and stick Santa that reads as though he is leaning into the room.
A printed decal that goes on the wall in under a minute and comes off again without taking the paint with it. The design is built so that Santa reads as leaning into the room from somewhere he should not be, which is why it works on a plain wall that has nothing else on it. About twenty-nine by twenty-five centimetres, printed on PVC, no nails, no tape, no ladder, and nothing to patch in January.
Santa at the edge of the frame, caught halfway into the room with the rest of him out of sight. The illusion depends on the wall being plain and the decal being placed at a height where a head would actually be, so a doorway reveal, a chimney breast or the side of a window works better than the middle of a large empty stretch. Printed at about twenty-nine by twenty-five centimetres, which is roughly a sheet of A4 turned on its side.
Peel the backing and press it onto a clean, smooth, dry surface. No tools and no measuring beyond the two minutes it takes to hold it against the wall and decide it is too high. Painted plaster, glass, tile, metal and most doors take it. Freshly painted walls, textured wallpaper and anything dusty or greasy do not, and no decal of any kind will hold on those.
It lifts away without leaving a sticky patch, which is the reason to buy a decal instead of a hook. Pull it away slowly and close to the wall rather than straight out. If it has been up through a hot month on a sunny wall it may want a little warmth from a hairdryer before it comes away. It is designed for a season rather than for reuse, so treat it as a one-December decoration.
A hallway, a child's bedroom door, the wall beside a tree, an office desk at the end of a partition. The point of a decal is that it goes where a nail and a picture frame would be a nuisance, which is most rented rooms and most student houses. Being flat and light, it also travels between them without breaking.
It presses on and lifts off. Nothing to fill in and no hook left behind in January.
No tools, no ladder, no steady hand required for the placement to look deliberate.
Removable printed PVC, for anywhere a picture hook would be a conversation with a landlord.

The trick needs an uncluttered surface, or the eye reads a sticker instead of a Santa.
Set the decal where a person would be standing, and the illusion does the rest of the work.
A wipe with a dry cloth doubles how well it holds. Dust and grease are what make decals fall off.
Pull close to the wall rather than straight out, and nothing comes away with it.
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth if it picks up dust, and do not scrub the printed face. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun on a hot wall. Once it is off, it goes flat into a folder or the bin, because a decal will not hold as well the second time.
No, as long as the paint is fully cured and the surface is smooth and clean. Fresh paint and textured wallpaper are the two surfaces to avoid.
It is built for one season in one place. You can lift it off cleanly, but it holds less well each time it is reapplied.
On glass and on smooth painted doors, yes, provided the surface is clean and dry. On a textured or dusty surface, no.
