About the gnome kit

A crochet kit that contains the whole project: soft yarn, a hook, a sewing needle, beads and small accessories, the stuffing, and written instructions. You work one gnome, finishing at about ten inches tall, which is a shelf or a mantel piece rather than a tree ornament despite the name. Four designs to choose from and everything cut to the right quantities, so there is no skein of yarn left over and no trip out for a hook halfway through.

What is in the box

Soft yarn, a crochet hook, a sewing needle, decorative beads and accessories, the stuffing to fill him out, and written instructions that take it a round at a time. Because the whole project is in there, the only thing you need to supply is somewhere to sit and a pair of scissors. The yarn is wound to the amount the pattern uses, which is why there is not much spare at the end.

The four designs

Noel is the classic red and white one with the traditional hat and beard. Candy Cane runs on red and white stripes. Snowy is the pale winter version, quieter on the shelf next to other decorations. Starry Night is the dark one, with the deeper colours and a scatter of small beads standing in for stars. Choose at checkout. All four are the same construction, so a second one goes together faster than the first.

Who it suits

Somebody who crochets a little and wants a project that finishes. The pattern works in rounds from the base up, the shape is forgiving, and the pieces that would show a mistake, the hat and the beard, are the last ones to go on. Complete beginners manage it with the written instructions in front of them, though the first round or two will want a second attempt.

Where he ends up

On a shelf, a mantel, a windowsill, a bedside table, or among a collection of them if you work through more than one design. At ten inches he is too big to hang on a tree and too small to be a floor piece, which puts him in the useful middle: something to stand on a surface and be looked at. The stuffing holds the shape, so he does not slump after a month on a shelf.

The whole project in the box

Yarn, hook, needle, beads, stuffing and instructions. Nothing to buy before you can start.

Four designs, one pattern

Noel, Candy Cane, Snowy and Starry Night share a construction, so the second one is quicker than the first.

Sitting down to it

  1. Start at the base

The pattern works upward in rounds, so the shape is set before any of the detail goes on.

  2. Count the first two rounds

Almost every problem in a first gnome traces back to the opening rounds. Check them twice.

  3. Stuff before closing

Firm but not tight, so the body holds its shape instead of slumping on a shelf.

  4. Keep the scraps

The yarn is cut to the project. Offcuts are worth keeping for the beard and the hat trim.

Care

A damp cloth is enough for cleaning, and it should dry in the shape you want it, rather than being washed, because a stuffed figure that goes into water takes days to come back. Keep it out of strong light so the yarn holds its colour, and work any flat spots back into shape by hand instead of adding more stuffing.

If you are new to this

A little helps and the instructions assume none. It is worked in rounds with simple stitches, and the first attempt at the opening rounds is usually a practice run.

Yes, yarn, hook, needle, beads, stuffing and instructions. You will want a pair of scissors and a flat surface.

A few evenings for a first attempt, taken at whatever pace suits. There is nothing to mix or bake along the way, so it can be left on the table and picked up again.
